What can whitening lighten?
Whitening changes the colour of natural tooth structure and can reduce some stains caused by food, drinks, smoking or ageing. It does not change the colour of fillings, crowns, bridges or veneers, so visible restorations may need a separate plan if the surrounding teeth become lighter.
The result varies with the original shade, the type of staining and how your teeth respond. A consultation should set a realistic range rather than promise a specific shade. Whitening is cosmetic and does not replace treatment for decay, gum disease, a cracked tooth or pain.
Why a dental examination comes first
Sensitivity, gum recession, untreated decay, leaking fillings and cracks can make whitening uncomfortable or unsafe until they are addressed. The dentist checks the teeth and gums, explains the product and timing, and discusses whether in-clinic treatment or supervised home trays suit your situation.
Follow the recommended amount and duration. Using a stronger or longer-lasting product without advice does not guarantee a better result and may irritate the gums. Stop and contact the clinic if you develop marked pain, gum burns or symptoms that persist.
Keeping a whitening result natural
For the first period after whitening, reducing frequent exposure to strongly coloured drinks and foods may help, but an extreme diet is not required. Brush with fluoride toothpaste, clean between the teeth and keep routine examinations. A maintenance plan should be based on your staining pattern and sensitivity, not repeated treatment whenever the shade changes slightly.
